THE CHOICES YOU MAKE WHEN YOU HAVE NO CHOICE
THE CHOICES YOU MAKE WHEN YOU HAVE NO CHOICE
When someone we love dies or is diagnosed with a serious life-threatening medical issue or has been in an accident or suffering or victimized, we don’t have a choice about what happened to us or our loved one. We are thrown into an abyss and the pit into uncertainty has swallowed us up as we dismally fall into it.
Our hopes and dreams and plans for the future fall into the abyss with us. Our lives have been upended, uprooted and out of control and we can’t see anything in the future because we don’t know and are fearful about what lies ahead. Every aspect of our lives have fallen into uncertainty and life, as we know it, has changed. We feel so out of control because we can’t control what has happened. We can't change what happened, but we can control how we deal with it. We can choose to fall apart and stay apart and sink into negativity or we can face all the unknown and uncertainty by taking control of ourselves and take on a positive attitude in our approach inside our thoughts and emotions. Yes, we still will need time to get ourselves under control. We need time to absorb what has been thrown at us. Our lives have just been upended and we need time to absorb the pain, the chaos and the vast uncertainty we are feeling. But in those devastating times in our lives, eventually we have to reel ourselves in and take control of our attitudes. We have to start climbing out of that abysmal pit we fell into and come to terms with it by taking it one step at a time one day at a time. There still will be times when we will feel defenseless, weak and vulnerable because we are devastated, hurt and lost. But we can overcome anything… And we will! How? By utilizing the tenacity of the human spirit to crack open the abyss and inviting the support and prayers of all our family and friends who love and care for us. By empowering ourselves with the courage to take control of any negative attitudes and overturning them into the positive with prayers for wisdom, clarity and insight to get through the uncertainty. Most importantly, by humbling ourselves and inviting God to walk beside us in every circumstance and to guide our every step along the way.
THE SERENITY PRAYER: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change (the circumstance), the courage to change the things I can (my attitude), and the wisdom to know the difference (clarity and insight).
“God is our refuge and strength, A very ready help when we are in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
