HEAVY BURDEN

HEAVY BURDEN:  There are days during the grief journey where it feels like the weight of the world is sitting inside of you.  It’s the kind of weight that takes heaviness to a new measure because it’s a weight that makes the brain feel drained on top of an overwhelming heaviness of heart   And, on top of that weight, our spirit feels broken.  There isn’t enough energy to get up off the couch or remove self from the bed because the entire body can’t move.   There is an inner exhaustion regardless of no sleep or too much sleep.  Every part of who we are feels immobilized.  Grief has taken over and it feels like life has taken a huge step backwards and the weight of grief has left us…Weak.  Exhausted.  Tired.  Alone.

How can loss weigh so much?  How can we find the energy to push through?  We go through the motions, but there doesn’t seem to be enough energy inside to give us reason to carry on.  We resist outside efforts that could help us break through; yet continue to engage in harmful behaviors that hurt and delay the healing process.  We need to get our strength back inside our spirit, but aren’t sure how to get it back.

The basis of any physical strength training is movement.  Strength training requires one to lift, push and pull on your body.  The same goes for strength of spirit training.  You have to find ways to lift your spirit by getting outside of yourself.  You have to lift yourself up off the couch, push yourself to do things even if you don’t feel like pushing; and, you have to pull yourself out of the dumps by adapting to the loss.  You have to overcome the grief so that grief doesn’t overcome you.  Once you start, you also have to give yourself rest intervals to ensure you allow time to recover while at the same time, rebuilding your sense of self.

It will take time to revitalize your inner spirit.  Be assured God is the internal source and the eternal force that will give you the will to lift, the will to push, and the will to pull yourself through.  All you need to do is to make the first move...

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28
